It is generally recommended to use the built -in Heading styles: Heading 1, Heading 2 etc for major and minor topic points and MODIFY these styles to suit your needs. Many of Microsoft Word’s automatic features, such as Table of Contents and Automatic Numbering, are designed to use these styles.

Note: If you use a Manual Table of Contents style, Word won't use your headings to create a table of contents and won't be able to update it automatically. Instead, Word will use placeholder text to create the look of a table of contents so you can manually type each entry into the table of contents.
Styles dwell on the Word 2016 Home tab, in the aptly named Styles group, as shown here. What you see on the Ribbon is the Style Gallery, which can be expanded into a full menu of style choices. Word 2016’s heading styles are numbered Heading 1, Heading 2, on down to Heading 9. You use them to identify different parts of a document, but they also take advantage of other Word features. You’re not stuck with using Word’s preset heading styles; you can create your own.
Word will insert a blank page if required to do this. This blank page however may not be visible in the normal document editing view, however it will be visible in print preview. In the normal view, you can keep an eye on page number to detect the missing inserted page. Step 2: add a title and style it with Heading 1.
The style immediately following the Section Title style will default to the Body Text style, to be used for the introduction of the section. Section titles will automatically be added to the Table of Contents, directly below the previous chapter title and with a half-inch indent, each time you update the whole TOC.

You will need to check which style of reporting is preferred in your field. For example a scientific dissertation would probably have very clear separation between the results and the discussion of those results; whereas a social science dissertation might have an overall chapter called Findings, bringing the results and their discussion together.
